Ask AI Assistant
Last updated September 21, 2026
Use Matruno chat and matter-scoped assistant surfaces for lookup, summarization, and bounded help without treating the assistant as counsel or the system of record.
Purpose#
Matruno includes chat and assistant surfaces that can answer questions, use matter context, process attachments, and help attorneys and legal ops find information. Use these features to reduce lookup time and summarize context, not to override workflow state, task ownership, approval requirements, or attorney judgment.
The assistant is not an autonomous lawyer and does not give attorney legal advice.
Matter-scoped context#
The chat API distinguishes general chat from matter-scoped chat. Matter-scoped turns can include matter context and attachments, while guardrails limit message and attachment size through environment variables such as CHAT_SCOPE_MAX_MESSAGE_CHARS and CHAT_SCOPE_MAX_ATTACHMENT_CHARS.
Retrieval is workspace-scoped and matter-isolated. Unauthorized users must not receive another matter's documents or AI context.
Use AI for acceleration, not authority#
Attorneys and legal operators should still rely on the workflow, task contract, and policy controls for the actual execution decision. AI can help clarify, summarize, and suggest, but it should not become an invisible control plane and should not invent citations, case law, or missing facts.
Good prompts are contextual
Include the matter reference, legal lifecycle stage, document name, or review-task context when you want a precise answer. Keep final legal decisions anchored to the saved matter, source documents, and attorney review records.
